Georgia's First Gold of London Olympics
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 29 Jul.'12 / 21:33

Lasha Shavdatuashvili captured Georgia's first gold medal of the 2012 Olympic Games after winning men's under 66-kilogram category in judo on July 29.

Shavdatuashvili, 20, defeated in the final Hungary's Miklós Ungvári and before that made his way to the final after defeating in semi-final one of the favorites Masashi Ebinuma of Japan.

Georgian Ministry for Sports and Youth Affairs denied on July 26 media reports that Georgia would award its Olympic champions with USD 1,2 million. It confirmed that medalists would receive financial awards, but its amount will only be determined after the end of the London Olympic Games; amount of financial award will depend on each individual achievement and total number of medals received by the Georgian athletes, the ministry said.
