Vano Merabishvili Appointed as PM
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 30 Jun.'12 / 19:17

Long-time and influential Minister of Interior, Vano Merabishvili, has been appointed as Prime Minister, replacing Nika Gilauri.

The move is probably the most significant change in the cabinet for many years as it involves one of the most influential figures in President Saakashvili’s administration – Merabishvili – who has led the Interior Ministry since December, 2004.

The news about the appointment first broke on Saturday evening after a brief statement about the appointment was posted on the President’s official website.

It is not yet clear who will replace Merabishvili on the post of the Interior Minister.

Incoming PM Merabishvili has now to nominate his cabinet, which will then face confidence vote in the Parliament dominated by President Saakashvili’s ruling United National Movement party.
