Key Deadlines Set for Abkhaz Elections
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 11 Jun.'11 / 11:35

Candidates willing to run for the early presidential election in breakaway Abkhazia will have to make a formal nomination from June 27 to July 17, Abkhaz news agency, Apsnipress, reported.

Earlier election, following death of Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh late last month, is set for August 26.

The breakaway region’s central election commission said on June 10 that it was currently rechecking the voters list.

It also said that the commission will register presidential candidates no later than July 27.

Results of election will be published no later August 29; second round of election, if needed in case neither of candidate garners more than half of the votes, should be held within two weeks.

Acting president Alexander Ankvab; the breakaway region’s prime minister Sergey Shamba, as well as opposition figure Raul Khajimba are likely candidates to run for the presidency. Some commentators say that Abkhaz businessman and a politician Beslan Butba may also run.
