Tbilisi Says 'Premature' to Comment on Calls for Missile Defense System Radar in Georgia
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 7 Feb.'11 / 18:49

Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister said on Monday it was yet “premature” to make any comprehensive comment on call by four U.S. Republican Senators to place NATO missile defense system’s radar in Georgia.

“This is a newly voiced initiative, so I can not really say that Georgia has any concrete position on this matter… This is a concrete initiative, which in itself is interesting and worthy of note in terms of stability and security in our region... It is premature to make any concrete comment on this issue at this stage,” Davit Jalagania, the Georgian deputy foreign minister, said at a news conference, on February 7.

Four Republican Senators last week called on the Obama administration to consider Georgia as an alternative site for placing missile defense system’s radar, instead of Turkey if the latter conditions deployment of the radar on its soil to a refusal to share information gathered by the system with Israel.
