Georgian Court Jails Abkhaz Official
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 16 Feb.'07 / 15:03

A court in the western Georgian town of Zugdidi found Pridon Chakaberia, head of the administration of Kvemo Bargebi village in the Gali district of breakaway Abkhazia, guilty of trafficking a “large amount of heroin” and sentenced him to 10-year imprisonment on February 16.

Chakaberia’s lawyer plans to appeal the ruling in upper court.

Pridon Chakaberia was arrested by the Georgian police in Zugdidi in December 2006, triggering protest from the Abkhaz side. Officials in Sokhumi claim that Chakaberia was in Zugdidi to buy medicine.
