TV Report Questions Official Prison Riot Death Toll
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 30 Mar.'06 / 16:34

The Imedi and Mze television stations reported on March 30 that the number of those who died in the March 27 prison riot in Tbilisi could be higher than the officially reported seven inmates.

According to Imedi TV, Mamuka Gviniashvili, an inmate from the 5th prison who according to official information died in the prison hospital, had multiple injuries on his body, including a gunshot wound to his head.

Relatives of Gviniashvili say that the official reason given for his death was liver complications, but the mother of Gviniashvili says she visited her son in prison just one day before the prison riot and he did not complain about any health condition. She also denied that her son was in the prison hospital, Imedi TV reported.

Deputy Justice Minister Givi Mikanadze has denied the report and said that Mamuka Gviniashvili has no gunshot wound.
